Osteopathic Treatment Techniques
OMT isn’t just a list of techniques, it’s a diagnostic approach built on the full foundation of medical knowledge and using palpation to discover the root cause(s) of condition(s) and their symptoms. Once a cause has been uncovered, there are numerous techniques we use to return the affected structures to a healthy state or return them to the point where they can start healing normally. Some of the most common treatment techniques are listed below.
Myofascial Release
Directly contacting injured tissues to unwind the injury, open the flow of fluid, reset the nerves, and return them to a state of proper healing and function.
Counterstrain
Indirectly unwinding myofascial structures in spasm to release its tension.
Balanced Ligamentous Tension
Balancing the tension along an injured ligament/joint complex.
Ligamentous Articular Strain
Compressing and balancing an injured tissue complex.
Muscle Energy
Alternating between stretching and balancing the engaged myofascial structures structure with active resistance by the person being treated.
What You May Experience With Treatment
Dr. King or Durante will review the history you’ve provided prior to your initial visit with them and will refine this history with you. After conducting a targeted physical and structural exam, he will have you sit or lie down on the table for treatment (occasionally we will treat you while standing). A typical treatment involves gentle and precise application of force to unlock restrictions and eliminate dysfunction in the body’s tissues, promoting normal physiology and harnessing your capacity to heal. Each treatment is unique according to that day’s evaluation. Do not be surprised if we treat areas of the body that seem unrelated to your conditions or symptoms. The body is an incredibly intricate and interwoven system with natural compensations, referred or up-/downstream activations, and cross-system responses. People often feel a sense of relief, tingling, warmth, and/or fluid flow with treatment; you may also experience emotional fluctuations or uncomfortable symptoms although these are traditionally short-lived. Just like any other physician’s visit, prescriptions for medications, diagnostic tests, or referrals will be given as necessary, along with recommendations for lifestyle changes, other therapies, or even surgery. The initial visit lasts up to 60 minutes with follow-up visits typically lasting up to 30 minutes.
What to Wear & Bring With You
Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes or bring some to change into. Please avoid wearing jeans and belts. For women, pants are preferred.
If you have new laboratory results, imaging, healthcare provider’s notes, or otherwise that you’ve obtained and were unable to send in prior to your visit, please bring them with you.
Although we typically require pre-appointment forms to be filled out and submitted prior to your visit, we understand that life isn’t always that easy. In the event that some of the information has not been submitted, come at least 15 minutes early to complete it in the office prior to your visit.
